Professor Marc-André Fortin is the head of the Biomaterials laboratory for imaging at the Center Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec (CR-CHU de Québec - Université Laval) in Québec. He is a full professor in the Department of Mining, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at Université Laval. He is the founder and manager of the imaging platform for small animals at the CR-CHU de Québec (magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and X-ray tomography), mainly dedicated to the study of nano(bio ) in vivo materials.

Dr. Fortin obtained his doctorate from the National Institute for Scientific Research - Energy and Materials (INRS-ÉMT - Montreal) and a postdoctorate from the universities of Uppsala and Linköping (Sweden; in biomedical imaging). Dr. Fortin has twice received a career grant from the Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec (Junior 1 and 2; 2008 - 2016). His main research interests include the development of nano(bio)materials for imaging applications, new strategies for imaging the biodistribution of nanomaterials in vivo, additive manufacturing of biomedical polymers for better visibility in biomedical imaging, as well as new routes for the synthesis of radioactive nanoparticles.

Dr. Fortin has published more than 60 articles (ACS Nano, Nanoscale, Advanced Materials, Chemistry of Materials, Journal of Controlled Release...), three book chapters and two reviews in the field of nanomaterials for imaging. He holds several patents on new ways of synthesizing nanoparticles using plasma technologies. Currently, it is funded by NSERC, CFI, FRQNT, IRSST and NRCan.

At Laval University since 2007, he teaches materials analysis, biomedical imaging and nanotechnology for biomedical applications. He is the president of the International Gold Conference 2022, a scientific platform that brings together the various leaders in the field of gold-based materials for high-tech applications.

Team

The research focus of our lab is the development of new materials that provide enhanced contrast properties in various biomedical imaging procedures.

In particular, we have focused on the synthesis, characterization and biomedical use of nanomaterials for cellular and molecular labeling. We are also developing coatings for magnetic resonance imaging and drug delivery.

The laboratory is hosted by the Center de Recherche du CHU de Québec (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec), one of the largest biomedical research centers in Canada, with strong expertise in biomaterials, oncology and regenerative medicine.

With direct access to biomedical imaging equipment for small animals (MRI, scanner, ultrasound), the laboratory makes the link between nanomaterials and biomedical research.

At the academic level, we train master's and doctoral students in biomedical engineering, nanomaterials and imaging sciences. Our students and research professionals evolve in a truly multidisciplinary research environment, where understanding the interaction between new materials, cells, tissues and  small animal models is of paramount importance.
